Teaching Style

My teaching style has evolved through professional development, studying my peers, and most importantly by listening to my students. To me, technology is one of the most important tools an effective teacher can use in the classroom to address different learning needs, to create a productive learning environment, and to increase student motivation.

In recent times, we have seen a dependency on technology to deliver lessons due to school closures. My experience in the technology industry has given me the confidence and ability to use technology as an effective learning tool.

This means that I endeavour to plan and deliver lessons that are interactive, exciting and cross-curricular and provide pupils with the opportunity to reflect upon their own progress and take ownership of their development.

This is a multimedia presentation I created outlining a series of lessons for a second year CSPE class. In the video I discuss how I would communicate the knowledge and key concepts of the Sustainable Development Goals to students.

Digital Tools

I am passionate about digital teaching and learning. I’m spending summer 2020 delivering computer coding classes to primary school children.

In my teaching, I use an array of creative ICT activities to add an extra dimension to students’ exploration of Geography. I have created a video presentation using Adobe Spark, within this video I outline a series of web based activities aimed at a group of senior cycle Geography students. This lesson is based on a Google Earth, My Maps Activity and can be viewed below.

To record this video I used a software called Screencastify Lite which allowed me to record my screen as I was demonstrating how to calculate distance, shape and area of a country using Google Earth, My Maps tools. By the end of the series of lessons, students should be able to produce a series of screenshots of their work. They must assemble the screenshots in a presentation form, along with their student worksheet, to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning intentions.

Here are a few examples of the digital media tools I used in the lesson shown above:

  • Google earth
  • My Maps
  • Vimeo
  • Screengrab
  • Screencastify Lite

I also have experience using Google classroom, SharePoint, and Edmodo to share and communicate online with my students and fellow staff members.

Lesson Plans

I have created a sample lesson plan and accompanying PowerPoint slides. This lesson plan is aimed at a first year geography class over a 40 minute period. The lesson plan can be navigated by using the arrow icons on the bottom left of the document viewer.
